The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score is a points-based system used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to rank Express Entry candidates. Scores are based on factors like age, education, work experience, and language ability. The highest-scoring candidates receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence.

Express Entry draws are held regularly (typically every 1-3 weeks) by IRCC. During each draw, candidates with CRS scores above the cutoff receive ITAs. Draws can be general (all programs) or category-based (targeting specific occupations like Healthcare, STEM, Trades, or French language proficiency).

Category-based draws target candidates with specific qualifications. Categories include Healthcare occupations, STEM professions, Trades, Transport, Agriculture, French language proficiency, and Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). These draws often have lower CRS cutoffs than general draws because they target specific skill sets Canada needs.

You can improve your CRS score by: improving language test scores (IELTS/CELPIP/TEF), gaining additional work experience, obtaining a higher education degree, securing a job offer with LMIA, getting a provincial nomination (adds 600 points), or having a sibling in Canada. Even small improvements in language scores can significantly boost your CRS.

The Express Entry pool is a database of all candidates who have submitted an Express Entry profile. Candidates remain in the pool for up to 12 months.
